A native of Albania, Gjilberta Gelaj began cello studies at age six. At age thirteen she won the National Young Artist Competition. As a result she was the youngest student ever to be chosen to tour in Italy with the Shkoder Symphony Orchestra. The highlights of the tour included playing for Pope John Paul II and receiving a full scholarship from the Padova Conservatorio di Musica. Under a full scholarship, Gjilberta went on to attend the Music Conservatory at SUNY Purchase College, Mannes College of music in Manhattan and most recently, Gjilberta received a Masters in Music Education from the Steinhardt School of Education at NYU. Performed frequently in Isaac Stern Auditorium at Carnegie Hall and Avery Fisher Hall in Lincoln Center. Most recently performed in the Amati (The Vatican Cello) and became member of the Westchester Chamber Symphony , Violoncello Professor at Allen Stevenson School for Boys in Manhattan. Featured in Couture Fashion Magazine 2007/2008/20011. Continuing from 2000-2011 performed as a soloist for the Hudson Valley Piano Club's Composer Series, National Arts Club's Young Artist Series and USA Couture Fashion Shows in NYC, Tri-State area, PA, Boston and Miami. Lecture recitals at the Valley Cottage library in the Hudson Valley and chamber ensemble concerts at Neuberger Arts Museum and Estherwood in Dobbs Ferry during the years 2005-2006. From 2000-2004 gave monthly performances with the Purchase Orchestra at the Performing Arts Center at Purchase College. Performed in Weill Recital Hall in Carnegie Hall with the "Passionata Trio" in February 2002 and April 2003 as part of the Young Artist Showcase. Continuing on 2003-2005 performed in CAMI Hall, Harvard Club, National Arts Club and Symphony Space. As a member of the Hudson Valley Piano Club, performed for various benefit concerts during 2004-2006 at the Naurashaum Church and Suffern Library. Recorded for Sony, Avatar Studios, Mascots Distance, Prestigio and RoyalRat recording studios in NYC. Also featured in the CD's of Cathoel Jorrs and Cordelia Stephens.Worked and recorded film music for composer Lonnie Leibovitz, Robert Liberman and Jonathan Zalben. Studied with eminent cellists such as Peter Wiley (Guarneri Quartet), Andre Emelianoff (Juilliard School), Julia Lichten (Orpheus Orchestra), Timothy Eddy (Orion Quartet). Performed in master-classes for Emerson, Tokyo, Orion, Guarneri, Juilliard, Orpheus, Brentano String Quartets and Yo-Yo Ma.
